Up from the Vaults: Hirschfeld-Mack’s monotypes

08 May 2019

In 2019, we continue our popular Up from the Vaults series. Throughout the year, the series will feature an in-depth look at art and objects from the University of Melbourne’s Cultural Collections, as seen through the lens of a subject expert from the University.

You are invited to join us in the newly opened Old Quad Library this Thursday as Dr Jane Eckett explores the work of Ludwig Hirschfeld-Mack.

Dr Jane Eckett is a postdoctoral researcher and teaching assistant in art history at the University of Melbourne. As the 2018 Ursula Hoff Fellow she studied the extensive collections of Hirschfeld-Mack’s monotypes at the Ian Potter Museum of Art and National Gallery of Victoria.

In this close examination of Hirschfeld-Mack’s prints, Jane reveals the artist’s enthusiasm for experimentation with the monotype technique – pushing the traced line to its limits – and provides us with an index with which to trace the global north-south migration of Modernist mark making.

Our 2019 program, Inside Out, has been generously supported by Peter Jopling AM QC, Andy Zhang and Calvin Huang.
