‘Quarry, Ferntree Gully’ 1978

Fred William’s Quarry, Ferntree Gully was painted on-site in 1978 and completed in the artist’s studio. This work follows a trip by the artist to New York in 1977 to see an exhibition of the work of French Post-Impressionist painter Paul Cézanne at the Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition included works from Cézanne’s Bibemus Quarry series, which were clearly influential on the use of colour and form in this painting.
