‘Mrs M P Fox, MA’ 1888

 

In 1885 Laura Mary Fox (née Moerlin) was among the first women to graduate from the University of Melbourne, and the second to obtain a Master of Arts just two years later. Commemorating the achievement, this painting by Marian Pirani is the earliest portrait of a female scholar in the University of Melbourne Art Collection and is still one of only a handful held today.
