The artists in this exhibition all employ different formal and conceptual techniques to explore tensions between story-telling, representation, and picture-making. The concept of ‘country’ and its depiction within particular cultural frameworks, guides ideas, stories and forms relating to place.

Cherel’s fields of varied mark-making, Jawalji’s striking geometry, and Ramsey’s free-floating pictographic representations, are dynamic individual variations of the art-making in the region where they belong, which encompasses the East and south Kimberley and the Gija and Gooninyandi language groups in Western Australia.
